Kezar Stadium

The stadium was built between 1922 and 1925 in the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park. It was named for Mary Kezar, who had left a large endowment for its construction.

The old, 59,000 seat stadium was demolished in 1989, and replaced with a modern, 10,000 seat stadium. Presently, the stadium is mostly used for high school football games but in the past such great acts as Led Zeppelin, The Tubes, The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Stage, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jefferson Starship, The Doobie Brothers and Tower of Power played here.

Listings asserting the Wild West Festival took place at Kezar in August 1969 continue to promulgate around the internet. Just one little problem: The festival NEVER took place.
The brainchild of Quicksilver Messenger Service manager Ron Polte, the event sank of its own weight in the weeks leading up to showtime behind a series of squabbles and "bad karma around the bread (money)".
Let me say it again, as clearly as I can: Never Happened!
There was no show. Janis, and the Dead and Airplane, and Country Joe and Santana didn't play. The festival never occurred.
Just sayin'.
