On March 21, 1952, Alan Freed emceed the Moondog Coronation Ball at the Arena. Many people regard this event as the first ever rock concert. Later on, Freed popularized the term "rock 'n' roll" while hosting a radio program on WJW.

The Moondog Coronation Ball never really happened, the fire marshals came in during the first song by Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams and shut the place down due to over-crowding as more then double the anticipated number of people showed up to see the Dominoes, Tiny Grimes, the Rockin' Highlanders, Danny Cobb, Varietta Dillard and Williams.
