On February 12, 1966 the Watts Acid Test was held here. You can read more abou it in Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
The hall was rented to hold a "happening" that was a precursor to future concerts. Kool-Aid spiked with LSD (legal at the time) was dished out to over 600 people who danced and freaked for hours on end.
The Grateful Dead who had been living in Los Angeles for a while performed.
